01 Research
User Research
Balance is both a physical and mental exercise. Regarding the essential elements of maintaining good balance, body tracking serves as an effective tool in assisting individuals to achieve proper body alignment.
After analyzing typical methods for home balance exercises, key areas for enhancing the balance experience were identified:
01 The visibility of every body part's movements;
02 Engagement and fun, fostering habitual practice;
03 The provision of mental and physical relaxation.
02 Ideations & Prototypes
Design Goal 01
Designing an experience that allows users to observe the movements of every body part and know if their bodies are properly aligned.
Workflow
Below outlines my workflows for rapidly ideating and testing potential concepts.
Concept 01
In this experiment, the main focus was to understand what balance is. Twelve trigger dots were created in Unity to test the precise positioning of body parts. Should any part move or shake, the background color would change as an indication. Additionally, trails were implemented to visually depict the movement of each body part.
Observation 01
Our body is not perfectly static when performing balance. Our body makes small movements all the time to maintain balance.
Concept 02
Then it was desired to use this small movement to remind the user. In this experiment, the off-position body part would be illustrated by red blocks, and the overall moving and shaking of the body parts would be shown by the size of the background grids.
Observation 02
In both experiments, in order to make the postures correct, more focus was placed on the background cues by the users than on themselves.
Design Goal 02
Designing an experience that aids users in focusing on themselves and their bodies during balance exercises.
Concept 03
Research on how people express themselves in the virtual world has shown that the methods include becoming a photogrammetry person, a 3D modeling person, or a robotic person. To some extent, all these forms possess human characteristics.
What if the virtual self is a more abstract one? What if the background cues/geometric shapes are people themselves?
Shape Research
Further research explored the relationship between body and shapes, exemplified by Oskar Schlemmer's Triadic Ballet. Geometric costumes highlighted the human body's dynamics, enhancing visual appeal and emphasizing postures.
03 Design
Transforming human body
into shapes.
Shape Me is a puzzle game!
On the left side is the puzzle shape, which transformed from instruction postures.
On the right side is user's shape, which transformed from user's real time postures.
User can move and adjust the posture to meet the instruction shape.
